Herald Fishing: Fish ‘definitely not under lockdown’

There are three things that never get cold: penguins, polar bears and fishermen.
Despite some decidedly chilly weather during the past week – in the mornings and evenings anyway – the local fishermen have been enjoying a pretty decent time of it.
Shad have been on the bite at various spots along the South Coast, but in particular in Shelly Beach at Drive Inn Bay.
The concern as usual is that there has been some overfishing, as reported by some anglers
Some don’t seem to know when to stop and others are keeping undersized fish.
Bronze bream are still feeding fairly willingly and the odd salmon (kob) is being landed.
However, there was nothing odd about the 12kg beauty Ernest Botha landed off Orange Rocks in Uvongo last Sunday.
In fresh water fishing, carp are still on the bite.
Further afield, Daboo Supal of Port Shepstone caught a 6,5kg garrick at Port St Johns.
It took him about half an hour to land, using sardine as bait.
There’s been some good bottom fishing as well, off Shelly Beach.
Among the fish that came out was a 5kg Scotsman caught by André Saayman.
A variety of species was caught, including rock cod, bronze bream, stumpnose and Englishman.
“The fish are definitely not under lockdown,” said André.
In the Hibberdene area, keen angler Ivor Krisch, back home from a four month work stint in Saudi Arabia, bagged some blacktail and shad.
On a lighter note: Sean Connery was seen fishing at the Sandspit, but the famous actor wasn’t having a great day. As he was leaving the beach, some of the locals asked him: “Hey, Mr Bond what did you catch?”
“Just a few undersized fish,” he replied, “so to be honest, I’m feeling a little ‘shad’.”
