Wet weather doesn’t dampen Riek’s good golf

The persistent rain didn’t put off all golfers with 20 players braving the muddy conditions for the October monthly medal competition at Umkomaas Golf Club.

Although, as to be expected, scores were generally not as high as normal, Riek Jansen Van Rensburg managed to play below handicap winning the B Division on 38 points and bagging the Monthly Mug on nett 69. Congrats Riek!

A Division was won by Sabiha Bacaus on 35 points and C Division by Mark Bezencon. Nearest the Pin prizes, sponsored by Jacques Hulley, were won by Tash Naicker (4th), Jacques Hulley (9th), Riek Jansen van Rensburg (13th) and Viv Naicker (17th).

Last Wednesday’s conditions by comparison were excellent and scores reflected the course conditions with Keith Vergottini scooping top spot on an outstanding 40 points. The ever-consistent Wally Kent and Barrie Taylor came in second and third on 37 and 36 points, respectively.

Juniors flying the flag

The many hours of practice are certainly paying off for our juniors who continue to make the club proud with their golfing accomplishments.

At the Bridge Fund series tournament played at Royal Durban last month, eleven-year-old Rory Bernardis secured second place in the U13 A Division with a better-than-handicap round of 11 over.

His cousin Noah also did well to achieve second place in the U13 B Division played on the same day. Well done boys!

Betterball League starts
The 2020 Betterball League kicks off this coming Saturday and promises to be a great competition.

Pairs will compete, over eight games in as many months, with prizes up for grabs in each competition as well as for the overall league champions. Thank you to Nelson Moonsamy for organising.
