National award for Derek James – again

there's no doubt that 'DJ' is someone who has added incalculable value to golf in Southbroom, South Africa and beyond, especially in Europe.

Derek James has done it again – he’s won the PGA of South Africa’s Club Professional of the Year for 2020, his third in total.

The awards function was held at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.

Messages congratulating him have poured in on Facebook, but typically Derek prefers to downplay his achievements and instead give the credit to his wife Sheena.

Whatever the case, there’s no doubt that ‘DJ’ is someone who has added incalculable value to golf in Southbroom, South Africa and beyond, especially in Europe.

He works hard, putting in long hours.

He loves the game and is always eager to see players of all levels enjoy their time on the golf course and of course, improve their scores.

In other golf news, the ladies played for the Curlewis Shield at Southbroom GC last Wednesday.

Visitor Jill Webster had the lowest score on nett 71, but the overall winner of the shield was Eli Bachmann as it can only be won by a member.

Runner-up on the day (outside of the Shield) was Eli Bachmann on nett 74, counting out Val Volck.

Tied for fourth on nett 76 were Rene Matthew, Jeanne Powell and Sandy FitzGerald 76.

The men’s Captain’s Trophy for the year, contested by monthly qualifiers, was won by Mike Lig on 37 points.

Medal winner was Malcolm Moorley on nett 69.

In the regular Stableford competition Bruce Matthew had 38 points, counting out Graham Sole.

Malcolm Greenland was next on 37 points, tied with André Steyn.

The Par 3 Contest last Sunday was won by Nic van Deventer on 24 points, with Eli Bachmann next on 20 points.

Junior winners were Talon Roos, Mason Roos and Nick Jr.

Colin McKay won the Chicken Run last Friday on 19 points, followed by Van Zyl Greyling and Malcolm Greenland on 18 points.

* At Port Shepstone, the Wednesday competition was rained out, but the Friday business day, sponsored by Callaway, was won by Ashoo Singh, Abel Yeeranna, Pete Govender and Santhos Baskali on 87 points.

Runners-up were Piet Fourie, Jaco van der Wal, Johan Neethling and Heber de Beer on 86 points, on a countout from Eddie Ringo, John Beekman, Jesse Verster and Tony Fairbairn.

The R & D golf day last Saturday was won by Greg Hornby on 37 points, on a countout from Sandi Burger and Johann du Plessis.

It’s the annual Beekman Classic this weekend, Friday (20th) and Saturday (21st).
