Sean bakes up another title

Koos Jacobs led after Saturday with near flawless 71, spoilt by two closing bogeys.

Sean Baker won the Margate Country Club strokeplay championships in a playoff against Robert Mavundla last weekend.

Although he’s based in George these days, he’s still a member at Margate and loves to play in the champs.

Koos Jacobs led after Saturday with near flawless 71, spoilt by two closing bogeys.

Baker and Mavundla, who had 74s on Saturday, surged into the lead early on Sunday and ended with matching scores of 69 for a total of 143.

It was Baker’s third title, the second in a play-off.

At Margate, the play-off is over four extra holes.

Baker bogeyed the 1st, parred the 16th and made birdies on the 17th and 18th to seal the deal.

“It was a bit of a surprise as I hadn’t been playing that well coming into the tournament,” he said.

Jacobs ended with 71 and 80 while veteran Ivan Curlewis had rounds of 76 and 77.

The B division was won by Joe Espach on a 36 hole score of 172, from Carlos Perreira who was a shot behind.

The C division played Stableford and was won by Kim Howden on 70 points.

Derek Egerton was the runner-up on 68 points.
