Surfers round out year in style

Skull Surf Club hosted its surf competition at Scottburgh main beach recently.
One of the organisers, Scott Mitchell, said the club was ‘really happy’ with the turnout and sponsor support for the event.
“It has been a tough year for everyone and it was great to see everyone surfing and smiling again,” he said.
Although the club normally hosts four competitions a year, this was the first for 2020 due to the national lockdown that had taken place over the course of the year.
There was a high turnout of competitors, which included a few surfers making the journey from Port Shepstone and Durban to take part in the locally-driven and community-orientated surfing event.
Surfers ranged from ages six to eight in the Grommet division.
Other age groups included the U10 boys, won by Cruz Reynolds, the U14 boys and girls, which were won by Luc Lepront (who also finished second in the under 18 boys division) and his sister Louise, respectively.
The U18 age group was won by Jordy Boshoff in fashionable style all, before the main attraction, the men’s and women’s open divisions.
SMTH Shapes sponsored the men’s open first prize with R1000 cash, which was won by Luke Thompson, while Kayla Nogueira bested the ladies to finish first in the women’s open division.
“The professional level of surfing that was on display was world-class, and we have so many junior boys and girls with so much promise for the future. Congratulations to all the prize winners and to all who came down to enjoy their surfing at our legendary beachfront in Scottburgh,” said Scott.
