Umkomaas crowned 2021 Allerton League champions

Our players consistently played well and racked up the wins and the points on the log.

The Umkomaas Allerton league team did the club proud, being crowned overall winners of the 2021 Allerton League. Playing their final match against Amanzimtoti at Durban Country Club on Sunday, the players once again showed their dominance with big wins in most of their games.

Russel McKelvey and Tash Naicker both won 3/1, Nelson Moonsamy won 2-up, whilst Gregg Andersson lost on the last hole. The others all scored big wins, including Chris Pillay and Saga Reddy 7/5, Viv Naicker 6/5 and Jacques Kirstein 5/4.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s competition was limited to 18 holes singles matchplay and this seemed to suit our team well. Regardless of playing clubs significantly bigger than ours, our players consistently played well and racked up the wins and the points on the log.

Sixty-four players braved the rather chilly conditions for the sixth installment of the 2021 Alliance League.

The recent cold snap has had an impact on the course with the ball running for miles on the drier fairways and hard bounces with the approach shots, especially on some of our trickier greens, meant players had to think twice about where to land the ball.

It seems that some players adapted better than others with Alliance scores far lower than we’ve been used to. In first place, winning on the count-out with 84 points was the team of Bruce Sutcliffe, Francois Rossouw and siblings Mags and Christo van den Heever.

Peter and Linda Toward, with Russel and Evija McKelvey.

Runners-up were Russel and Evija McKelvey and Peter and Linda Toward. Third place was also determined by count-out on 83 points with Tom and Dean Naicker, Kuben Naidoo and Christopher Pillay pipping their nearest rivals. Sabiha Hulley scooped the jackpot making an impressive 11 points. In the money, for 2-clubs, were Saga Reddy, Brian Stephen, Natalie Singer and Jordan Bernardis.
