Herald Fishing: Another one bites the line

The set up used by Zuwaid was a Daiwa Saltiga 5-7 ounce rod, paired with the Daiwa Saltiga 50 HK reel, topped up with 30LBS maxima green line.

During a recent trip to Port St. John’s, keen fisherman Zuwaid Dada of Umtentwini ‘scored big’ on his line when he reeled in an 18kg garrick off Umzimvubu.

“It wasn’t long after getting there that I settled some live bait in the tempting water. Not long after I slid out two live silver bream on one slide trace using the bunk style. I could actually see the garrick splashing,” he said.

Kumaran Naidoo of Marburg shows off his 14.2kg garrick.

“I heard the drag screaming, the sound of every fisherman dreams of. The adrenaline certainly kicked in. It was like ‘it’s on’. It was a wonderful fight and the fish displayed its staying power for 20 minutes before I safely landed it,” he added.

He wasn’t the only one to land a garrick.

Kumaran Naidoo of Marburg also caught a big one, clocking in his personal best with a 14.2kg garrick.

“Caught it in the Umzimvubu River on my light tackle, using a Shimano Sahara 5000 reel, an Assassin Amia kob special rod, 30lb Boss Braid line. It took me about 5 minutes to land it,” he said. “I was extremely chuffed about the catch.”
