Interclub triumph for Southbroom

Southbroom Golf Club won the KwaZulu-Natal Interclub at Selborne Park last Sunday, beating Royal Durban 2,5-0,5 in a rain-soaked final.

Jean-Marc Bouic beat Steve Young 3/1, David Rush halved with Graeme Forbes and Gavin Sole beat Bradley Davison 4/3.

“It was a tough weekend of golf, playing the stroke-play in exhausting heat and on two very challenging golf courses. Sunday was very different, however, rain and cold weather during the matchplay rounds changed the game completely and only added more pressure,” Bouic said.

In the semi-finals Southbroom got through on superior holes count against Kloof Country Club after Bouic halved with Brad Jones, Rush lost 1 down to Ryan Welsh and Sole beat Stewart Theunissen 4/3.

Southbroom led the qualifiers over the two strokeplay rounds at Selborne on Friday and Umkomaas on Saturday. Scores were Bouic 75 and 75, Rush 72 and 78, Sole 74 76.

It was the fourth time Southbroom has won the title, others back in 2010 at San Lameer and 2012 and 2014, both at Margate Country Club.

Sole has been part of all those wins.

“It’s always special to win. We had a great team spirit which played a massive role in our victory. I also had my son with me which made it more special to have him witness it,” Sole said.

It was a first for Bouic and Rush, the former who has been a member for about 40 days and the latter for about 40 years!

The other divisions were won by Kloof (B), Maidstone (Frog) and Beachwood (Senior Frog).

The Sunday alliances were won by Toti (A), Umhlali (B), Selborne (Frog and Senior Frog).

About 330 players took part in the event over the three days at the three golf courses, namely Selborne, Umkomaas and Umdoni Park.

Next year the tournament will be played at San Lameer, Port Shepstone and Southbroom.
