Despite steady rain all day, 22 die-hard golfers took to the sodden fairways for the monthly medal competition at Umkomaas Golf Club.

With only a few breaks in the clouds, some abandoned their follies along the way, choosing instead to watch the 7s in the clubhouse whilst enjoying a few cold drinks. The others, determined to finish out the round, appeared thoroughly wet but cheerful citing great company and surprisingly good course conditions.

For two golfers, the rain seemingly made little difference as they shot better-than-handicap rounds to take top honours.

Fazel Khan’s 87 gross equated to nett 68, two below par and saw him lift the monthly mug for the second month this quarter. His 38 points also saw him take first place in the C division, two ahead of Christo van der Heever.

B division was won on 33 points by Brian Stephen, and runner-up was Jeremy Boyd on 29 points.

A Division winner was Viv Naicker who also made a 2-putt to take the kitty, and shared the jackpot haul with new member Heather Parsonage who also secured the 10 points to qualify.

Max van der Heever is ladies medal champion for December 2021. Max has been playing wonderful golf and her efforts are certainly paying off as her game improves and the handicap comes down. She shot an impressive 98, nett 70, three shots better than par, to take the ladies medal glass.

Denise Nell was next best with nett 82.

The midweek IPS competition continues to draw good numbers and by the regular high scores it seems the secret to good golf is playing regularly. Brian Stephen edged out Simon van den Bosch in a count out to win the midweek first place on 39 points. Third place was won by Harold Horsley on 36 points.

Saturday is the ladies Christmas alliance and as always, visitors are very welcome. There are some tee times still available, so please contact Francois or Charmaine in the pro shop on 039 9731042 to secure yours.

The competition fee includes a snack platter and live music at the prizegiving and there are always lovely festive prizes up for grabs.
