Young golfers shine at Umkomaas Golf club
The KidzGolfers were challenged with chipping darts and a 6-hole putting course with great fun had by all as they chased the honours and prizes on offer.
The annual KidzGolf prizegiving took place last week Saturday, after a series of fun competitions designed to put the golfers’ skills to the test.
It is the culmination of another year of Saturday morning lessons that have seen some start from scratch and others build on their skills.
The KidzGolfers were challenged with chipping darts and a 6-hole putting course with great fun had by all as they chased the honours and prizes on offer.
Coming out on top was Sohail Khan (9) whose natural talent is already shining through.
He secured the putting competition win with an excellent score of just 9 putts over six holes and his 25 points in the chipping darts meant he secured first place there too.
Methinks we might have another potential golfing superstar from Umkomaas in our future. Neil Mackay (11) was chuffed to be awarded Most Improved Golfer for 2021, proving that his perseverance and practice has paid off.
It is wonderful to see he and others shifting their skills from the practice area to the golf course as they play 6-pin on Friday afternoons. Next goal, securing handicaps!
Other prize winners on the day included Caleb Eriksen and Garyn Lambert and our lone girl golfer Alisa Eriksen who regularly proves that #girlslovegolf, beating the boys with her great skills.
A special prize was given to Michael Brummage who, despite breaking his arm a few days before the event, came out and showed his great skills with left-hand-only putting and chipping.
Started nearly 30 years ago, EGTF qualified golf coach Devlyn Fraser has been sharing his knowledge, skills, and love of the game with local children.
His daughter Natalie, a single-figure golfer who has been coached by her dad since she started playing golf at the ‘ripe old age’ of 19 years despite growing up on the course, has been assistant coach since 2020.
Open to UGC members’ children and grandchildren at no cost and for a nominal cost to others, KidzGolf aims to share the love of the game and encourage more youngsters to take it up.
Equipment is provided and lessons take place from 08:00 to 09:00 on Saturdays during school term times, and more information can be found by emailing umkomaasgolf@gmail.com
KidzGolf is on break during the summer holidays, but will resume in late January 2022.
