Tough time for tennis players
Both players started off with solid wins, Raj defeating number two seed Kobus de la Porte 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 while Ian defeated Renier le Roux in his first match.
Umtentweni Tennis Club players Ian Ackerman and Raj Naganna recently headed up to Pretoria to take part in the ITF Growthpoint Senior National tournament. Both players started off with solid wins, Raj defeating number two seed Kobus de la Porte 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 while Ian defeated Renier le Roux in his first match.
Ian followed that up with a good victory over Micha Lanzer from Israel, which saw him then progress to the singles semi-final. However, going down in that match sent Ian through to the third and fourth place playoff, against Miles Foxcroft from Gauteng. While up in the first set, at 5-2 and on set point, Ian incurred a leg injury while reaching for a shot and sadly, his tournament came to an end.
For Raj, he received very sad news on the loss of a close family member and immediately withdrew and returned home to his family.
Members trust next year will be a more fortuitous one for both.
Regular Saturday afternoon social tennis again saw a good turnout in very hot conditions and a few ice cold beers were enjoyed after some great tennis. Special thanks to Ian Ackerman and Dan Dimitriu who washed all the dishes. Tea duty: Saturday 19 – Morgan Reddy.
