Eshowe a happy hunting ground for SKZN golfers

They successfully defended the KZN Country Districts Interzone title, dominating the strokeplay on day one and then going unbeaten through the matchplay.

It was mission accomplished for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal golf team at Eshowe Hills in Zululand last weekend.

They successfully defended the KZN Country Districts Interzone title, dominating the strokeplay on day one and then going unbeaten through the matchplay on Saturday and Sunday.

The only slight blemish was a 4-4 half against Ilembe on the final morning, but the tournament winners had already been decided by Saturday night.

For the record, they beat Zululand 4,5-3,5 and Northern KZN 6-2 on the Saturday morning, following it up with an 7-1 victory over East Griqualand that afternoon.

In the Friday strokeplay, Southern KZN won both morning and afternoon sessions, led by captain Jean-Marc Bouic who finished runner-up on 71 and 72, one behind Tom Lovett (Ilembe). He would also finish runner-up to Lovett as MVP for the tournament.

The team’s strokeplay scores were as follows – Jean-Marc Bouic 71 72, Jack Cubitt 74 71, Gavin Sole 74 72, Matthew Sutherland 75 74, Graham Fabricius 77 72, Graham Sole 80 80, James Coull 81 79, Jan McDermott 81 79.

The camaraderie was great, well for most. The affable, unflappable skipper Bouic bore the brunt of the teasing.

‘Anyone seen the captain?’ was a frequent chirp on the WhatsApp group, initiated unsurprisingly by the Big Fish (Gavin Sole) and aided and abetted by the butcher, McDermeat, sorry McDermott.

Bouic had a quick response: “Just doing my job boys, collecting the trophies.”

The winning team comprised Jack Cubitt (Umdoni Park), Gavin Sole (Southbroom), Matt Sutherland (Umdoni Park), Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park), Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom), Graham Fabricius (Umdoni Park). Graham Sole (Southbroom) and James Coull (Port Shepstone).

Four players from Southern KZN were chosen for the KZN country districts team to play in the SACD tournament at Sishen in mid May.

Bouic has been named as captain and will be joined by Cubitt, Sutherland and Fabricius.

The other players are Matt Walters and Greg Smith (both Ilembe) and Jarred Good (Zululand), with the final selection to be confirmed after Astin Arthur (Ilembe) unfortunately had to withdraw.
