SA Country Districts challenge awaits Bouic and co

It's his first IPT – he only made his Interzone debut at the end of 2019 and is arguably the region's most improved golfer since then.

Four players from the Southern KwaZulu-Natal golf team will soon have the opportunity to play Sishen Golf Club, one of the finest courses in the country, for a week or so.

That’s the venue for this year’s South African Country Districts tournament, which will be played from May 9 to 13, plus a few practice games in the build up.

Jack Cubitt (Umdoni Park) is the only player back from last year’s team which won at East London GC.

It’s worth mentioning that due to the lack of IPTs in 2020, all players became eligible for the 2021 event, but this year, no player who represented KZN at the premier and mid-amateur IPTs in 2021 is eligible for selection for country districts.

It means Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom) will captain a vastly inexperienced team.

It’s his first IPT – he only made his Interzone debut at the end of 2019 and is arguably the region’s most improved golfer since then.

He said he felt honoured to be given the opportunity to lead the team and felt there was a positive team spirit developing.

“I’m confident the guys have put in the necessary preparation leading up to the tournament. It will be exciting to be able to experience one of the top courses in the country, even though it will be a first time for most, if not all,” he said.

Graham Fabricius (formerly Port Shepstone but handicapped at Umdoni Park) makes a welcome return after a few years out of the game.

He has played in two IPTs previously, so does bring some experience.

Matt Sutherland (Umdoni Park) played for Southern Cape as a youngster, and makes his KZN debut at the age of 30.

He’s had a very steady season so far and will go to Sishen as one of the senior players.

“The team will be spear-headed by Jack and I know that with his experience and cool head he will be solid up front. Matt’s consistency, especially off the tee, will make him and his foursomes pairing tough to beat. And it’s great to see Graham back in KZN colours.”

The other four players are Matt Walters and Thobelani Magwaza (both Umhlali), Greg Smith (Simbithi) and Jarred Good (Empangeni).
