Handicap league off to sizzling start
The next round will be played at Umdoni Park on July 31.
Judging by the closeness of games in the opening two rounds of the Southern KZN Handicap league, it looks like the 2022 season will be quite exciting.
The first round was played at Southbroom GC on June 12.
With Southbroom entering two teams this year, including their premier league players, it has meant that no team had to sit out on a bye.
It has created an extra buzz and the banter and camaraderie has been superb and much-needed considering the various challenges everyone faces at this point in South Africa.
But back to the golf.
At Southbroom, Selborne Park beat Margate CC 6,5-5,5.
Port Shepstone CC gave Southbroom B something of a walloping, trouncing them 9-3.
Southbroom A beat Umdoni Park 6,5-5,5.
Round two was a week later, due to the initial fixture being rained out.
This was played at Selborne Park, where the hosts beat Southbroom A 6,5-5,5.
Southbroom B bounced back with a solid win over Margate CC, 9-3.
Umdoni Park thumped Port Shepstone CC 9-3.
It has made for some absorbing action, with a number of the premier league players, new to this format, realising that one cannot be lulled into any false sense of security because they are playing a golfer with a (much) higher handicap.
The games have been competitive and fun, played in good spirit.
There are a lot of regulars, including seriously seasoned campaigner Gerald Koch (Port Shepstone CC) in his mid 80s.
And then at the other end of the age spectrum, young Cameron Olivant (Southbroom GC) making his league debut at the age of 13.
The next round will be played at Umdoni Park on July 31.
The hosts play their neighbours Selborne, Southbroom A plays Southbroom B, and Margate play Port Shepstone.
The penultimate fixture is at Margate CC on August 14 and the final one at Port Shepstone CC on September 4.
