Fish on the bite

Good catches for south coast lads Mitchell and Clayton.

Although the weather seemed prefect most days on the fishing front, there was not plenty to catch or boast about except at Margate Pier last Saturday. One fisherman said the pier was like a flea market with plenty of shad on the bite. “Shad was thick,” he said.

Bottom fishing has been kind to these guys and some great fish have been landed. Bianca Edwards caught a 25kg mussel cracker at a depth of 80m off C’s Bianca. She launched from Hibiscus Ski-Boat Club in Ramsgate.

Conrad Edwards landed a 28kg amber jack at the same depth off Ramsgate.

The rock and surf angling scene has cooled down a bit but there’s hope as the sardines are still afloat, so there is still plenty to catch.

Clayton Hugo once again had a good catch and caught his third garrick at Margate Pier last Thursday. He used an Okuma Precision 15ft rod and his Saragosa 25k on a live shad. The fish weighed in at 11.39kg.

Fifteen-year-old Mitchell van Zyl caught a 21kg mussel cracker using squid bait at Ramsgate recently. Mitchell is said to be a phenomenal fisherman at his age, and we wish him everything of the best. Remember to send your catch of the day to sugann@dbn.caxton.co.za.
