Poppesquo and Leys clinch Amateur Classic on debut
A total of 160 golfers took part, up from 88 last year.
As expected, the annual Southbroom Amateur Classic played at Southbroom Golf Club last week was an absolute blast.
The fields were full and the scoring pretty decent considering the firm winter conditions and slick greens.
Winners on debut were Grant Poppesqou (Mount Edgecombe CC) and Norman Leys (Huddle Park GC) of Golfers’ Club renown.
They got off to a hot start with 47 points, steadied things with a pair of 43s and then finished strong with 45 points.
They won by five points from Andrew Rex and John Beaumont, both members at The Country Club Johannesburg, with past champions Pat Cronin (also The Country Club Johannesburg) and Bob Thomas (Southbroom) one point further behind.

Main sponsor was, once again, Hibiscus Insurance Brokers, represented by Alan Hall, who all enjoyed varying degrees of success of the course.
There were functions in the evenings, where golfers were able to resume old friendships.
Comedian Dix Vorster made a welcome return on Thursday, still with a strong singing voice and his usual wit, leaving it to The Gentry to play out in style on the Friday night.
