The finals of the 2022 KZN Ladies Inter Region competition took place at Selborne last weekend.
Despite threats of rain, the golfing Gods played ball and kept the ladies dry, if cold, on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning as they competed for top honours in this year’s Inter Region.
The annual competition, played over three rounds, sees regional teams (of four pairs) compete against one another. The first two rounds are played back-to-back over a single weekend, in Betterball Matchplay, with winners progressing to the Championship flight, and losers to the Plate division.
This year, the two South Coast Region teams, Umdoni and Mkuhla found themselves playing one another in round two, with victors Mkuhla setting themselves up for a final berth.
Finals format reverted to the traditional 36-holes. Round one, played on Saturday afternoon, is Betterball Matchplay, and round two, Foursomes, played on Sunday morning, with the same pairings competing across the weekend.
The Championship division was a tousle between two Durban Region sides, with the Durban Invitational side winning well, accumulating 11 points to 4.
Local lasses, SCR Mkuhla, took on the Northern Zulus who travelled to the coast from Northern Natal. The Mkuhla team combined brilliantly and had a near clean sweep, winning three games and halving one. Despite taking a compelling 7 -1 lead into the Foursomes on Sunday, the girls were committed to bringing home the trophy in style.
Grateful thanks must be given to SCR president Leanne Parsons who stepped in at the 11th hour to replace an injured team member, for the Sunday morning round. A handicapped competition, Mkuhla had to give shots across each of their Foursomes matches, and despite some of the matches turning ‘down’ against the Northerns at halfway, all teams turned things around on the back nine.
In the end, three teams managed victories with the number one pairing going down the 18th all square, finishing in a tie, after what can only be described as a ding-dong match. Mkuhla raised the trophy, 14 – 2 points victory over the Northern Zulus.
When asked, Mkuhla captain Natalie Singer, said “Grateful thanks must be extended, on behalf of my teammates, to our SCR committee whose support logistically and financially enabled us to compete this year. To my players, thank you for your camaraderie, team spirit and great golf. I am so proud to play alongside such wonderful golfers and friends, representing this beautiful region.”
