From the bowling greens: Mixed pairs tourney? You bet!

The tournament has attracted bowlers from around the country.

The Hollywoodbets Lower South Coast mixed pairs bowls tournament will take place on the South Coast from August 22 to 26.

The field of 56 mixed pairs comprises players from all over the country, as well as a healthy local contingent, all competing for a total of R26 000 in cash prizes.

The host clubs are Southbroom, Munster, Port Edward and Banners Rest, which between them offer 28 rinks.

Each pair plays nine matches of 12 ends each and the prizegiving will take place in Port Edward on the Friday afternoon.

This tournament originated at The Nest Hotel in the Drakensberg in 2004 and was held there until the coordinators, Janet and Boy Venter, moved to the South Coast and hosted it here from 2016.

Boy died from Covid complications but Janet has continued to organise the tournament with the help of representatives from the participating clubs, namely Rob Lyle, Anthony Card, Denise de Witt, Albert van der Lithe and Neale Cary-Smith.

For the first time, the competition has attracted an anchor sponsor, Hollywoodbets, which has put up R20 000 in prizemoney.

The sponsorship was secured by Johnny Louch – himself a bowler who runs the fundraising charity Expro.

“Bowls is such an important part of many communities, but especially here on the South Coast. Hollywoodbets’s man on the ground Devin Heffer, whose grandfather was a bowler at Parkhill BC, put up the sponsorship because he understands the emotional importance of the sport, and also the plight of single-green bowling clubs where the challenges of making ends meet are high,” said Johnny.
