From the bowling greens: Brian and Eileen win LSC pairs tournament

News and results from South Coast bowling clubs.

The Hollywoodbets Lower South Coast 2-4-2 Lawn Bowls tournament was won by Eileen Burt of Southbroom BC and Brian Douthwaite of Margate BC.
The week-long tournament drew a strong field of 56 mixed pairs from around the country, as well as a healthy local contingent, all competing for a total of R26 000 in cash prizes.
Host clubs were Southbroom, Munster, Port Edward and Banners Rest, which have 28 rinks between them.
Each pair played nine matches of 12 ends.
A maximum of 180 points was on offer, and Eileen and Brian accumulated 128.
Locals Maureen and Wayne Muller finished second, and Sharolyn Dacey and Steve O’Moore from The Bell BC were third.

The lead changed hands after every session and the winners determined only on the last end played.
The 2-4-2 tournament began at The Nest Hotel in the Drakensberg in 2004 and was held there until the coordinators, Janet and Boy Venter, moved it to the South Coast in 2016.
Boy died last year from Covid complications but Janet has continued to organise the tournament with the help of representatives from the participating clubs.
For the first time, the competition attracted an anchor sponsor, Hollywoodbets, which put up R20 000 in prize money.
The sponsorship was secured by Johnny Louch – himself a bowler who runs the fundraising charity Ex Pro.
“Bowls is such an important part of our community, especially on the South Coast. Hollywoodbets’ man on the ground Devin Heffer, whose grandfather was a bowler at Parkhill BC, put up the sponsorship because he understands the emotional importance of the sport, and also the plight of single-green bowling clubs where the challenges of making ends meet are high,” said Johnny.
A sum of R3 000 was also donated to South Coast Hospice.
