Linda and Max win eighth edition of Betterball League
The Umkomaas club's flag was held high.
A total of 52 players competed in the eighth edition of the monthly Betterball League, and it was lady captain Linda Toward and partner Max van der Heever who emerged outright winners on a count out on 42 points from Barrie Taylor and Nelson Moonsamy.
Third place was collected by Steve Oliver and Mike Dennison, one point back, and fourth, fifth and sixth prizes were determined by count-outs on 40 points. I’m sure the players could think of the places where a point or two slipped from their grasp.
Max played great golf and amassed 11 points on the jackpot holes to claim the cash, and the two-club pot was shared by just two players, Barrie Taylor and Evija McKelvey. Well done.
The mid-week field continues to grow, 43 players competed in the individual Stableford format. Steve Oliver’s 39 points was enough to secure him the win, with Piet Vermaak counting out Simon van den Bosch and John Cook to third and fourth place on 36 points. Christo van der Heever counted out Jeremy Boyd on 35 points for fifth and sixth spots respectively.
Our ladies and men’s champions, Sabiha Bacaus-Hulley, Natalie Singer, Kavesh Seepershad, Dheen Naicker and Patrick Ndlovu, travelled up to Kloof to compete in the 50th anniversary KZN Champion of Champions competition.
The course was set up in true championship style with many of the pins tucked into tight spots. The Umkomaas contingent were proud to see Tim Clark’s name and message as the tournament’s patron, a real honour.
Fortunes were mixed and scores higher than desired as most of our players struggled with the combination of hard greens that didn’t hold and lightening pace for putting. Our Strokeplay champions faired best with Sabiha Bacaus-Hulley finishing 9th overall in the Ladies Division and Dheen Naicker finishing Top 20, in 18th position. Well done for flying the Umkomaas flag.
This weekend is the Alliance League and while it’s an ongoing tournament across the year, each monthly edition is a standalone competition and so visitors are always welcome.
