Championship crown for Kuben and Dheen at Umkomaas
Another young Bernardis takes home the silverware too.
The final match in the year-long Betterball League was played in rather challenging conditions at Umkomaas Golf Club. Why does it seem compulsory for the wind to howl and the rain to fall on a Saturday? Despite the conditions, particularly for those battling up the last four howls in the sideways rain, the scores were very good.
Winning the day was the pair of Denise Nell and Christo van der Heever who put together 46 points. This aided them too in their bid to finish in the overall league prizes, taking third place.
Dheen Naicker and Kuben Naidoo played steady golf throughout the year amassing 326 points in total, finishing 7 points clear at the top of the log, from Mike Dennison and Steve Oliver who took second spot. In fourth were Lucas De Bruyn and Tallies Taljaard, fifth place were long-time club members Wally Kent and Ken Koster, and final paid placing in 6th were Harold Horsley and John Webster.
The penultimate SCR league game was played at Umkomaas, a match originally scheduled for April, but delayed due to the floods. Grateful thanks must go to the greens team who were out early to double-cut the greens, ensuring the course was in fantastic condition. The fairways are looking green and lush thanks to recent fertilizing and the soft rains. The course promises to be in outstanding nick for the holiday season and we look forward to welcoming visitors to #thefriendliestclub.
Umkomaas played against Margate and while two out of three games were down at the turn, both managed a comeback, with number one pairing (Natalie Singer and Heather Parsonage) winning 2 up and the second pair (Evija McKelvey and Lesa Vergottini) securing the half. Wonderful golf from our number threes (Sue Boucher and Denise Nell) who secured a resounding 5 and 4 win on the 14th green.
Well played ladies, the 5 points will certainly aid us in an upwards move on the log as we head into the final game in a few weeks’ time.
We’re used to hearing about the fantastic results of the Bernardis twins, Rory and Jordan, and their cousins Damien O’Connell and Noah Rudwick, but two weeks ago it was the rose among the thorns who was thrust into the spotlight. Little sister Mila played in the SA Kids competition, winning the girls U7/8 category at just five years old. Well done, Mila!

In the same tournament brother Jordan came second and Damien took top honours. Wonderful to see the youngsters doing so well, a product of the many hours they each put in under the guidance of oupa coach Willie O’Connell.
