A belated happy New Year to readers and golfers.
The visitors have returned home and by all accounts they enjoyed their stay here in Scotties – except rainy days. The course was busy and the players were complimentary on the condition despite the wet areas.
The last day of 2022 saw the last monthly medal of the year sponsored by Dis-Chem and this sponsorship will be carried through this year. As per usual Pete Gilliver took the A division gross with 76 and Barry Kisten the nett with 74. In the B division which is always hotly contested Doc Mahabeer carded a 82 to win the gross and Deane Jooste a 70 for the nett. The C division was won by Pete Morris on 34 and runner-up was Denis Brown with 33. Deane Jooste’s 70 taking the final medal. The two Petes’, Gilliver and Morris had a visitation from our two spectral ghosts Spoekie and Caspar to win the Alliance.
It was a case of the ‘in form’ players carrying on from where they left off last Wednesday, as Deane Jooste ably assisted by Bob Hall took centre stage with 40 points. Denis Brown was helped along by Willie Lombard for 39 and second spot with the two Amp Tramps Gary Jones and John Mills taking third with 38. The Welsh visitors are not going home empty-handed as once again Dave and Janet Beckerly won the Stone. Better keep an eye on the Stone before it ends up permanently in the principality.
The Umthunzi Hotel was the first sponsored day of this year and we hope it won’t be the last as every one is hoping that this special day will be continued. We had to play a re-routed 9 holes twice due to the very soggy top nine holes, but in true Scotties form we kept calm and carried on. No surprises as Denis ‘the menace’ Brown will be spending two nights at Umthunzi with his 36 point win. Playing partner Wayne Simpson will have an overnighter for second with 35 and Geoff Thommasen took third and two bottles of wine with 34. Nearest the pins went to Pumba Joubert on the 2nd and 10th with Darren Walker taking the 5th. Lloyd Treherne got the only registered 2 club.
This Saturday (14th) we will be celebrating Sarah Falle’s birthday with a mixed bag of formats. The first six holes will be betterball, the next six greensomes and the final six foursomes. The handicaps for each third will be printed on the scorecard, but just in case bring a calculator. It promises to be a fun-filled day and the family will be putting up some great prizes. Don’t forget that the Nomads will be in town on Tuesday, January 17 so come along and join this notable crowd of golfing stalwarts
