Rugby Sharks development on our doorstep
The aim is to provide the youth, irrespective of race, religion and gender, the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential through rugby and life skills development and welfare of the participants.
The Sharks Transformation Committee South Area has been mandated by The Sharks Transformation Committee on Inclusivity and Diversity to spearhead the transformation of rugby in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality as a pilot programme.
Lulu Bodla, The Sharks Transformation Committee chairman, took the lead with this initiative.
He appointed a task team (coordinator Theuns Steenkamp) to launch this project.
The aim is to provide the youth, irrespective of race, religion and gender, the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential through rugby and life skills development and welfare of the participants.
“The South Area Committee is going to follow a holistic approach where we want to see a young person participate in rugby, get the opportunity to play, coach and referee,” said Theuns.
The committee will also get involved in a wellness programme for the participants.
Stakeholders forming part of this project are the The Sharks Transformation Committee on Inclusivity and Diversity, The Sharks Transformation Committee South Area, Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Ugu District Municipality, Southern KZN Rugby Sub-Union, The South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre is going to increase community involvement by working in partnership with sports federations and community organisations.
As such, this development will create an environment that will enable community use of sports.
Therefore, The Sharks Transformation Committee South Area, is sought to provide a home for the transformation and talent identification at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.
After the successful launch of the programme last month, the task team held a meeting to dissolve the local organising committee and the task team and the Sharks Transformation Committee South Area was appointed by Bodla.
The appointment of members are as follows: Theuns Steenkamp (chairman), Reshma Maharaj (SCCCI), Deidre Rankin (Ugu District), Thulile Mqadi (Ziphakamise), Dick Basday (SCCCI), Zandile Mbhele (Ugu District) and Sibusiso Kunene (Ugu Sports, Arts and Recreation Office).
