Ugu surfriders crowned KZN champs
A massive thanks was extended to Tidy Towns' Reg and Christelle Horne and Stephen Herbst, as well as the Ugu committee, who managed to stage a very successful event.
St Mike’s beach welcomed 130 of the province’s best surfers recently as they battled it out to be crowned champions in the Tidy Towns KZN Surf Champs.
It’s an annual triangular surfing tournament between the three KZN surfing districts, namely Ugu, Ethekwini and Ilembe surfriders associations.

Ugu won the most points of the three districts, with nine individual winners on the day.
The Saturday saw clean offshore groomed waves in the two to three foot range, and surfers from U10 right through to O60 took advantage of the superb conditions and high quality waves to advance through the rounds.
It was a day of high scores, close calls and heartbreak for some as their hopes of a provincial title slipped away.
For those that advanced to finals day, they were greeted with three to five foot waves and a strong north-easterly wind.

However, this did not put a damper on the day as radical surfing and high scores were the order of the day.
Once the spray had settled it was the host district Ugu Surfriders, who were crowned the overall team champions, taking an impressive nine division wins, five silver medals, three bronze medals and seven fourth places to oust North Coast counterparts Ilembe into second place, with Ethekwini from Durban Central having to settle for third place.

A massive thanks was extended to Tidy Towns’ Reg and Christelle Horne and Stephen Herbst, as well as the Ugu committee, who managed to stage a very successful event.
There were many sponsors who pulled together to put this event on and bring yet another significant surfing contest back to the South Coast.
