Rookie fisherman lands snoek
With the right coach and teacher he is now hooked on fishing and is loving every moment.

Fishing may seem like a complicated sport, but it’s not that hard to get set up.
Yes, it can be intimidating, especially in huge groups when fish are on the bite, but it’s only as complex as you make it. Remember, you will need a licence to fish.
One South Coaster, Lwando Maphumulo (25) from Oshabeni, who had never fished in his life, landed his first fish recently. With the right coach, he is now hooked on fishing and loving every moment.
Eckhardt Potgieter recently hooked a Natal snoek, and Lwando landed it. He is Eckhardt’s landscaper, and he started training him after he started assisting him to make lures.
“He showed skills, so I decided it was only fair he goes fishing with me. I hooked a Natal snoek, handed him the rod and said, wind it baba, and he did just that and landed his first fish. It was a proud moment for him, and he enjoyed it,” said Eckhardt.
Lwando is learning quickly. “While fishing can seem intimidating at first glance, it’s one of the simplest and most enjoyable hobbies. Once hooked, you will never stop,” he said.
Local fisherman, Ian Logie, caught a 15/20kg hound shark at Sea Park recently, and five grey sharks which were safely released. Fishing was not promising on the South Coast last weekend, with just a few shad, bronze bream and kob caught, and one lucky fisherman caught a brusher on a shad trace.

Remember, responsible fishing is keeping the shoreline clean and adhering to the fishing regulations relating to bag limits. Anglers, don’t forget to send your catch of the day to sugann@dbn.caxton.co.za.
