Gold for cheer crew
The athletes learned some elements of the displays only days before the competition which is a true testament to their dedication and love for the sport.
The Mid South Coast Crew is making headlines once again.
The team recently participated in the KZN Majorette and Cheerleading Association finals, which are held annually to round off the provincial competition season, and brought home gold.
It was held at Dokkies in Berea and attended by the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association’s president, Wayne Obernen.
“As a development team, it is wonderful to be part of an event of this calibre so that the athletes can experience the glitz and glamour that a final offers, with all teams being outfitted in their beautiful uniforms, hair and makeup on point and giving their all on the field,” explained Liezel Jooste.
She added finals are a completely different experience from a regular competition. “To be a part of the event is an experience on its own; to leave with gold medals is an indescribable feeling.”
The crew participated in six categories: majorettes large group pom non-prop for juniors, performance cheerleading hip hop doubles, performance cheerleading hip hop, performance cheerleading pom doubles, performance cheerleading pom for primary school and performance cheer pom for tertiary.
“The athletes learned some elements of the displays only days before the competition, which is a true testament to their dedication and love for the sport. We are proud of our achievements as we did this with borrowed props and uniforms that we made ourselves due to lack of funds.”
The Mid South Coast Crew started the season believing that they could compete in only two or three categories but cleared their own doubts when they were able to achieve gold in five.
The team first got together in February and have faced a number of challenges.
Being a development team, fundraising is crucial, and with limited time and resources, they have had to be creative in getting what is needed to compete.
“Sadly, we were not able to compete in all the disciplines as we could not secure the props we needed, but we made the most of what we did have and came out smiling at the end.”
The lack of knowledge about the sport has also been an obstacle, with many not knowing what it’s about, so it’s difficult to attract new team members.
However, they have assembled a small but amazing team who have pushed themselves and improved through the course of the season.
“We now start with planning and recruiting for the 2025 season and will hopefully be able to attend nationals next year,” said Jooste.
The crew thanks Scottburgh Country Club for use of their premises for practice and to Scottburgh Primary for acknowledging the athletes’ achievements.
The Mid South Coast Crew offers a variety of categories within the majorette and cheerleading disciplines, from flag displays to hip-hop dancing displays.
They have a primary, high and tertiary team, and although the majorettes itself is predominantly female, males are welcome to join for the performance cheer categories.
Through the sport, participants can get fit, acquire new skills and learn how to work well as both individuals and in a team.
They can also achieve both provincial and national colours, and possibly even Protea colours.
