Umkomaas trio aim to defend Senior Frog title
The coast has had a lot of rain this week, but sunshine is predicted for the tournament duration.
Umkomaas Golf Club will be hoping to, at the very least, defend the Senior Frog Interclub title at this year’s edition, played at Port Shepstone, Southbroom and Margate. The team comprises wily veterans Tom Naicker, Saga Reddy and Anil Seepershad. Umkomaas takes Interclub seriously and has five teams: one A division, two Frogs and two Senior Frogs.
Fellow Senior Frogs Francois Rossouw, Louvain Schnuir and Jacobus Taljaard will be hoping to be in the mix as well. Their A division team is a mixture of youth and experience in Greg Thiel, Noel Parsonage and Damien O’Connell. The two Frog teams – Viv Naicker, Tash Naicker, Martin du Plessis and Vishan Gounden, Chris Pillay, and Kavish Seepershad – will be competitive.
Selborne Park goes into battle with one team in the Senior Frogs, namely Adrian van Vuuren, Tim McGregor and Tony Outram. Umdoni Park has a team in the Frog division comprising Gordon Ross, Anthony Phillips and Steven Swain.
In terms of other South Coast clubs, Southbroom will also be trying to defend the A division title. Southbroom won the A division at Umdoni Park last year, finished runner-up at San Lameer CC in 2022, and won it on a rainy Sunday at Selborne Park in 2021. Gavin Sole and Jean-Marc Bouic have played in all of the last three editions, with Cameron Olivant coming in this year for Graham Sole, who hasn’t played much golf.
Gavin and Jean-Marc have recently played for KZN at the SA Mid-Am Interprovincial at Humewood. KZN ended up second (in the B division), with Gavin going unbeaten. Graham will team up with Cyprian Xolo and Jan Nqoko to form an A2 team and would love to meet the A1s in the matchplay, a task that is not impossible.
Southbroom’s Frogs team comprises Grant Richards, Grantie Richards and Stefan le Roux. They are fielding three teams in the Senior Frogs, namely Don Osbourn, Simon Shusha and Sbu Ntozakhe; Neil Crossey, Christer Solgevik and Werner Duggan; and Gary Purtell, Brian Jolliffe and Jack Moulder.
Margate CC has entered three teams, one B division (Conrad Bonzaier, Andries Fourie and Rupert Niebuhr) and two Senior Frogs – Carlos Pereira, Bill Sargent, Craig Rademan and Kim Howden, Kevin Oxenham and Johan Erasmus.
Port Shepstone CC have entered two teams. Their Frogs are Johan Janse van Rensburg, Gavin van Wyk and Theo van Rooyen, with Senior Frogs in Howard Crouch, Tinus Pretorius and Rob Calder.
The tournament will be held over three days at Port Shepstone CC, Southbroom GC and Margate CC. Matchplay semi-finals and finals on Sunday will be played at Port Shepstone, with the alliance trophies at Southbroom.
