Autumn may be approaching, but summer isn’t going down without a fight, as was experienced in Cuatro tennis action last Sunday.
Pauline Lee described it best after a gruelling three-setter in the mixed plate, her match with partner Alan Hurlbatt going to three sets against Herman Ehlers and Geraldine Thompson.
“Loved every minute, even when we felt like we were being slowly braai-ed from the inside out!”
That about sums up the tournament so far, with some exciting tennis and wonderful camaraderie on display despite the heat.
The Collocotts, Allan and Karin, had an even longer game against Guy Spittal and Jenny Senneck, winning in three sets, with two of those being tie-breakers.
Earlier in the week, in the main mixed doubles draw, Geoff Borchers and Renee Purtell emerged winners over Bjorn and Cheryse Wikstrom in arguably the match of the tournament so far.
It ebbed and flowed, producing thrilling rallies, with Geoff and Renee’s experience seeing them through in the end after trailing 4-2 in the decider.

Renee Purtell/Deanne Purtell-Massyn beat Venessa Johnson/Karin Collocott 6-2, 6-3.
