Qualifying for the AmEx tennis club tournament (sponsored by American Express) will take place this Friday at neutral venue Uvongo TC.
The winning team proceeds to play the provincial qualifier at Westridge Stadium in Durban on May 10.
It’s a national event, focused on reviving and growing club tennis. Locally, Southbroom has entered two teams and Umtentweni one.
The format is interesting, with the teams of four comprising two men and two women.
The teams will play women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles, with the order of play decided by the captain who wins the pre-match toss.
Matches are first to four games but must lead by two games. If it goes to 4-4 then a regular tiebreaker is played.
If the sets are tied on 1-1 then a first to 10-point tiebreaker is used as the third set.
In the mixed doubles players can tag in after a set (ie: swap). There is also no advantage played, so in effect a sudden-death deuce point. The ‘no let’ rule will also apply.
