Two teams set to travel to Westridge

Local qualifiers were held at Uvongo last weekend.

Two Southbroom Tennis Club teams will head to Westridge Stadium this Saturday to play in the AmEx Club tennis tournament.

They will stand a chance of winning some cash for their club.

Local qualifiers were held at Uvongo last weekend, but things didn’t go quite as planned.

After a delay due to rain, Tweni Strikers took on The Broom Squad.

In what could probably best be described as a freak injury, David Rush sprained a finger (and sustained cuts and bruises) when slipping and falling on some concrete slabs.

This was en route to collecting a ball that had been shanked out of the court off Darral Pillay’s racket following a rocket serve from Bjorn Wikstrom.

David couldn’t carry on and his place was taken by Johan van Niekerk, definitely an upgrade.

Sympathy flowed from friends and family. “Oh, you plonker,” said one. “Stick to what you know – golf,” said another. “You were there, and then you weren’t,” observed one.

The Strikers ended up beating the Broom Squad 3-0 and then beat Southbroom Smashers 2-1 in the second game.

Liesl Smith was unbeaten in her doubles and mixed doubles games.

However, the Strikers will not be going to Durban for the next round, unfortunately.

The game between the two Southbroom teams ended up with the Broom Squad taking the honours, 2-1.

Teams were:
Strikers – Darral Pillay, David Rush/Johan van Niekerk, Liesl Smith, Robyn Olivant.
Broom Squad – Bjorn Wikstrom, Cheryse Wikstrom, Brendan Els, Sharon van der Schyff.
Smashers – Daniel Francesconi, Stef Francesconi, Deanne Purtell-Massyn, Pauline Lee.
