Cash prize eludes Ugu tennis players
The level of tennis was higher than some of the players are used to, but valuable experience was gained nonetheless.
Two Southbroom Tennis Club teams did battle in the AmEx Club tennis tournament at Westridge Park tennis stadium in Durban recently.
There was a cash prize on offer for the winning club, which went to Bellevue in both A and B divisions.
Southbroom Smashers comprised Daniel Francesconi, Stef Francesconi, Deanne Purtell-Massyn and Pauline Lee.
The Broom Squad consisted of Bjorn Wikstrom, Brendan Els, Cheryse Wikstrom and Sharon van der Schyff.
“I was really proud of our two teams for representing Ugu and Southbroom and giving their best over the weekend. We’ll come back next year stronger and better prepared,” said Sharon van der Schyff, Ugu Tennis Association chairperson.
Umtentweni TC had also looked to enter a team and enjoyed playing in the qualifier at Uvongo TC the week before.
They actually won the qualifier, but not all the players could make the Durban trip, so hopefully next year.
The team comprised Darral Pillay, Johan van Niekerk (who filled in when David Rush got injured and had to stop playing), Liesl Smith and Robyn Olivant.
At Westridge, Bellevue won the R5000 prize for taking top honours in the B division.
They also took home R8500 for winning the A division and qualify for the national final where they will represent KZN at Sun City from August 29 to September, all expenses paid.
Kim Hayes, secretary of the eThekwini Tennis Association, said it was a pleasure to watch such strong tennis being played.
“We had eight teams in the B division and five teams in the A division. It was super to see two teams from Southbroom/Ugu,” she said.
