Kiewiete clinch San Lameer Country Club’s 4×4 trophy

San Lameer is the ideal venue for such a big event.

San Lameer Country Club’s annual men’s 4×4 team challenge is always hugely popular. And no, before you imagine off road vehicles shredding the fairways to bits, that’s not the case.

It’s a golf tournament with a cool name, 34 teams of four playing over four days, with four different formats. It tees off with a fourball alliance in the opening round, followed by the tactical demands of foursomes, the teamwork of betterball Stableford, and the pressure of singles play in the final round.

San Lameer CC general manager Pierre van Vuuren shares Hein Smith’s hole-in-one joy with him.

This year the winners were the Kiewiete, namely Bobbie van Heerden, Jacques Erlank, Fish Pienaar and Flip Lourens. Runners-up were the Potch Ysters, consisting of Danie Jansen van Vuuren, Rudi van Dyk, Walter Plotz and Bennie Viljoen. In third place were the Benchwarmers, consisting of Heinrich Strydom, Jean van der Kevie, RJ Haagner and Pine Pienaar.

The fun best dressed prize was shared between Happy Hookers (Janco du Plessis, Jeandré Barnard, John Rautenbach and Cobus Muller) and Golf Swarries, namely Stephen Brink, Anton Botes, Gideon Jansen van Rensburg and Thomas Abt.

The challenge was first played in 2000, and has since become one of the best amateur events in the country.

The event is so much more than just golf; the camaraderie and friendships formed over the years are what make it so special.
