Nervy win for Southbroom golfers against Umdoni

It all comes down to the final fixture of the season on August 31.

Southbroom Golf Club’s league win over Umdoni Park last Sunday was nervy for two reasons.

The first was that, at one stage, it looked like some of the team may miss their tee off time, getting stuck behind some slow moving traffic on the alternate route to Port Shepstone Country Club.

The second was that Umdoni Park are always a formidable opponent and it was no different last Sunday, with Southbroom pushed all the way.
In the end, the final score was 6,5-5,5 to Southbroom after the greensomes were halved 2-2.

Southbroom are now within touching distance of the Southern KZN Handicap League trophy, needing to beat Selborne Park at Southbroom on August 31 to secure the title and cash prize that goes to the club.

Southbroom captain Grant Richards was delighted with the win. “It was not an easy match, it was a very tight game. We had some lucky putts that dropped for us and we were able to beat them. The course is in good condition and the greens were beautiful to putt on. I’m chuffed we were able to scrape a win.”

Umdoni Park captain Jacques Kirstein had only praise afterwards, despite the narrow loss. “Thank you to Port Shepstone for hosting the match. All the arrangements were spot on, we enjoyed playing at the club,” he said.

He congratulated Southbroom after the hard-fought battle. “To captain Grant and team, well done on the win. Thank you for the spirit in which the games were played and good luck for your last match.”

There are five scenarios that can still play out to determine who will be the winners this year.
If Southbroom win, that’s it, they are the champions.
If Margate lose, Southbroom will be champions.
If Southbroom lose and Margate win, then Margate will be the champions.
If Southbroom halve and Margate win then Margate will be the champions on superior match points.
