If you saw a teenage boy fishing for funds at the traffic lights in Shelly Beach last weekend, then know that it was Divan Dixon of Uvongo.
And if you gave him some cash then you have helped him get to Bloemhof as part of the junior South African freshwater bank angling team.
Bloemhof is an agricultural town situated on the banks of the Vaal River in North West province and fantastic for fishing.
Divan is the first junior (U13) from Margate Freshwater Angling Club to gain selection for this team, coming off some excellent results at nationals.
The team was chosen last year and Divan, who attends Suid-Natal High, has since turned 14.
Much like his father Juan, he is a talented all-round sportsman, and particularly good at rugby.
Juan is also a keen freshwater fisherman, having introduced his son to the sport.
Is there still any debate over who the family’s top fisherman is? You will have to ask Juan.
“Definitely him,” laughed Juan, “well, that’s according to him, you know how it is!” More laughter.
Truth be told, Juan also has provincial fishing colours and is delighted with the progress his son has made.
Divan’s fishing highlights over the last two years include junior club champion 2024/5, KZN U13 victor ludorum runner-up 2024, KZN U13 team 2024, Penkop club champion 2023/4, KZN U13 victor ludorum 2023, South Coast Zone U13 victor ludorum 2023.
He is not afraid to work hard and put in the extra hours to ensure success.
He spent a good few hours ‘fishing’ at the traffic lights and thanked all those who donated.
The family is grateful to all those who have sponsored, regardless of the amount, to make his dream come true.
