Local acts make waves at cultural fest

The festival, the first of its kind, featured many cultural acts from around the province

SOUTH COASTERS certainly proved there was more to the coast than meets the eye at the first ‘Isiqothu’ festival held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Saturday.

Cultural groups from different communities showcased our diversity rich culture – and showed that we are more than ‘just’ a holiday destination.

Judges evidently had a tough time choosing the best.

Also featured were groups from various Nguni tribes found in KZN as well as the Eastern Cape such as Amabhaca and Amampondo.

The two performed ‘Imfene’ and ‘Amabhaca’ dances, leaving the audience eager for more.

Both tribes are rare to the South Coast and, as a result, they received standing ovations.

However, it was Umsenti Cultural Group from KwaNzimakwe which triumphed and took first spot in the women’s ‘Ingoma’ dance.

Organisers said the the aim of the festival was to promote tourism, arts and culture.
