DECEMBER is just around the corner and an advance peek at some of the weird and wacky ‘holidays’ in the month is good for a laugh or two.
December 1, apart from being World Aids Day and Rosa Parks Day, both of which are serious matters, is also Pie Day, Eat a Red Apple Day, Day With(out) Art Day and Bifocals at the Monitor Liberation Day. No one seems to know who invented most of these holidays – except that they were probably American – but researching Bifocals at the Monitor Liberation Day lifted the veil of secrecy that covered more than 80 of them.
They were invented – and even copyrighted – by Thomas and Ruth Roy, under the name of Wellcat Holidays & Herbs.
In December alone the couple is also responsible for Bathtub Party Day (5th), Pick a Pathologist Pal Day (13th), Cat Herders’ Day (15th), Barbie and Barney Backlash Day (16th), Humbug Day (21st), Tick Tock Day (29th) and Falling Needles Family Fest (30th), when you are supposed to sit round and watch your Christmas tree disintegrate.
Apart from the Roys’ contributions, December would seem to be the month for biscuits, with the first week being Cookie Cutter Week, including Cookie Day on the 4th. December 8 is devoted to brownies and – judging by the photograph on the website – they don’t mean the junior Girl Guide variety. The 10th is set aside for decorating gingerbread and the 12th for making a gingerbread house. And – in case you haven’t yet had enough – December 18 is Bake Cookies Day.
Other gastronomic delights honoured in December are fritters, Sacher Torte, gazpacho, pastry, cocoa, bouillabaisse, lemon cupcakes, maple syrup, roast suckling pig, oatmeal muffins, French fried shrimp, date nut bread, pumpkin pie, fruit cake, chocolate candy, bacon and chocolate-covered anything. To wash that lot down you have Rhubarb Vodka Day on the first Saturday in December, Sangria Day on the 20th and Eggnog Day on the 24th.
If you are going to have to face Champagne Day on December 31, you will be glad to know that the 30th is Bicarbonate of Soda Day. You’re going to need it!
