LEADING South African concert pianist Christopher Duigan gave music lovers a top class show at the Azalea Hall, Margate Retirement Village last Saturday.
Christopher, who has performed at various venues on the South Coast and who has many local fans, completed his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Brazilian virtuoso Arnaldo Cohen.
Edgar and Tookie Kelly from the Village.
Christopher told the Herald that his fascination with the piano and music has brought so many wonderful things into his life. “As a professional musician I am truly fascinated by the music I play, its social and historical context, and the notion that, in another life, a composer/ pianist was creating this music, and by re-imagining the physical gesture and movements I am able to recreate something of that.”
He explained that music without an audience is only a rehearsal.
Patrick and Gaby du Plessis of the Village.
“I am passionate about sharing my music with others, bringing live performances of the compositions that fascinate me, that enthrall, transport and engage me, to others.”
He was awarded the Professional Performer’s Diploma and won first prize in the college’s prestigious Recital Prize for Pianists.
Recent engagements include playing with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown.
Dudley and Eve de Klerk of the Village.
As well as a Steinway Artist, he has been officially recognised as a ‘South African Piano Icon’ and a ‘National Musical Treasure’.
