Bhangra and giddha performance in Marburg highlights an age-old tradition
The show was a resounding success.
AN exciting 12-member bhangra and giddha group gave an exhilarating performance at the Andhra Sabha Hall last Sunday.
The event was hosted by the Consulate General of India in Durban, in association with the Department of Arts and Culture, together with the Sa Re Ga Ma Music Academy and the Prem Jyothi Seva Sungam, under the banner of The Port Shepstone Youth Society and was led by Shri Ajay Kumar.
Vernon Govender of Sa Re Ga Ma Music Academy said that the dances depicted the spontaneous feelings of the joy, mirth and festive spirit of the hardy peasants and the toiling womenfolk of rural Punjab.

“Of all these dances, bhangra and giddha have retained their charm till today. Bhangra is not only the most popular but also the liveliest dance which projects the vigour of both the body and spirit of the Punjabi youth.”
He pointed out that the folk dances which have dominated the socio-cultural life of the people of Punjab for the last eight decades include bhangra and giddha.
