The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction.

1930:  Creator of Sherlock Holmes dies

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr Watson, dies aged 71. Edinburgh-born Doyle trained as a doctor and began writing while in practice at Southsea.

His interest in science and history was reflected in many of his novels. In later life he became a spiritualist and was knighted in 1902.
