Retired teachers applaud women’s freedom

"We are grateful to our past because we are now living a life which has opened doors for our daughters."

Pensioners’ Fellowship, a club for retired teachers gathered at a Women’s Day event at Margate Hotel last Tuesday.

Guest speaker Nthabiseng Sosibo said that they have to celebrate the holiday which gave freedom to women.

“We talked about many aspects pertaining to women, we looked at women from the old days, women now, and how we expect women to be in the future. We also looked back in history where women were oppressed and had no say. We are grateful to our past because we are now living a life which has opened doors for our daughters.”

Sosibo also referred to current teachers and teaching methods, and mentioned that back in the day strict rules applied to women teachers.

She said the way they dressed to how they spoke and carried themselves was important.

“Back then our learners respected and listened to us, we also did everything by the book, we didn’t question anything, but did as we were told.”

Sosibo said that they are thankful to God that they have lived to this age. The women also support each other and they have also started travelling and enjoying their retirement.
