Umgababa schools go solar

High school learners at schools in Umgababa will soon benefit from uninterrupted learning during scheduled power outages.

THE second phase of providing power to Umgababa high schools, so that learning does not stop even during load-shedding, is being rolled out by the Umnini Community Trust.

The trust’s secretary, Sipho Msimango, said two high schools in the area have installed solar panels, with two more to go.

“This is the second phase of this power provision project. During the first phase last year, we donated and installed inverters in all four high schools in Umgababa. Now, this second leg will ensure that the sun’s energy is harnessed to provide power to these inverters in case of load-shedding. This is all done to ensure that computer laboratories can still be used when the scheduled power goes off,” said Msimango.

During March, Esizibeni High School and Sidelile High School had solar panels installed. Mnganiwakhe Secondary and Mcothoyi Secondary School will follow in April.

“Our chairperson, Busani Luthuli, is a big supporter of education and the youth, so he has put all programmes that benefit young people at the forefront. The joy of learners and teachers after the power backup has been installed is priceless,” said Msimango.

He added that the second phase cost R400 000. Inkosi Phathisizwe Luthuli created Umnini Community Trust to administer projects that promote the development and upliftment of his subjects.
