ATM scammer disrupted on the ‘job’

When Danny’s wife from Chrisville, went to the ATM at Tramway Street, Turffontein on Saturday July 13, she didn’t anticipated she would be scammed, luckily she is a fighter.

Until today she still has the wallet, three cards (ABSA Flexisave Debit Card, Woolworths Card and Capitec Card) and a Lotto ticket, all these items she grabbed them at the hands of the scammer after he tried to swap her card.

“My wife went to withdraw money when she was approached by a gentleman in a queue, telling her that she had inserted the card the wrong way. As he was about to ‘help’ her, she realised that her card has been swapped.

“An altercation ensued and she grabbed his wallet before he could put the card in. After that, the man ran away and jumped into a car and sped off. Just a minute after, another guy came behind my wife and tried unsuccessfully to grab the wallet of the scammer,” explained Danny.

COURIER has had two letters already in the past month about this particular place and the ATM scammers.

On Monday July 15, Danny said he tried to go to Booysens Police Station to open a case, he was shocked by the service or the lack of service he got there.

“I was standing there at the reception waiting for someone to help me however no one came to my assistance. You could hear that there were police at the back but no one came to help me and my wife. I just came back home, but I still have the cards and they have the name and account numbers of that person who tried to scam my wife,” noted Danny .

Booysens Police response:

Why is it that when we do not receive the required assistance at shop or a bank we demand to see the manager but when it comes to not receiving assistance at the SAPS, the media is always the first people to know?

In the case mentioned, the complainant came to the station on July 15; it is now August and the matter has been brought to the station management attention. In the CSC there is a notice that informs the public that if they are not happy with the service they must ask to speak to a senior officer, and as the complainant came to the station on a Monday, all the senior officers were at work.

This office therefore requests that the complainant please contact the office of the Station Commander or my office so that the relevant information can be obtained from him and the necessary steps can be taken against all the members involved. The South African Police Service has put in numerous steps to improve service delivery.

With regards to the incident that he refers to, this office would like to know where this ATM is so that there can be operations planned accordingly and the owner of the premises spoken to to ensure that the incident does not take place again.

This office is appealing to the community that if they are in the same situation as the complainant was, to please report the matter straight away to the senior officer.
