Driver escapes accident unscathed

After yet another accident on Klipview Road, Liefde en Vrede, residents are angry.

LIEFDE EN VREDE – Another accident on Klipview Road, Liefde en Vrede leaves residents up in arms and fearful of the many accidents on the same road, just after the bend.

On Sunday September 29 at about 11:00, the driver of a VW Polo Vivo GT drove down Klipview Road, skidded out of control and smashed into a resident’s wall.

Minutes before the accident young children had been playing in the front garden, but had thankfully been called inside just before a huge bang, when the vehicle collided into the wall.

“This is the third accident in two months. The other two vehicles went through our wall, demolishing it both times. The one collision narrowly missed going through our lounge window, where we sitting and the next just missed me and our complex security guard as we were stood outside. This time our the car has crashed into our neighbour’s wall opposite us.

“We are sure speeding was the cause of the previous collisions and to us it seems like it was also the cause again, although the driver stated he was only going 60kmh.

“We are nervous wrecks and every time we hear a bang we think it’s another accident. We’ve contacted out local Ward Councillor, Paul Smit, who has been in touch with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) requesting barriers to be installed as well as Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) asking that they do speed control.  Up to now nothing has been done!

“This road is used by many school children walking to and fro from school. It’s only a matter of time before there’s a fatal accident,” the resident said.

The owner of the house, where the car smashed into his wall, said, “Thank goodness the children had just been called inside otherwise one or more could have been injured.  Who’s going to fix the wall?  I won’t be able to open my sliding gate. How will I get in and out?”

The driver walked away from his vehicle unhurt apart from a few grazes. “I wasn’t going fast. As I came round the bend my back wheels skidded and I mounted the pavement before crashing into the wall and tree.”

As neighbours gathered on the pavement at the scene of the accident, tempers were frayed.  “This is happening far too often. Is speeding at fault or is the bend too severe? We are calling for action from JRA to intervene and do something before someone is killed.

“At the top of the road there are always burst water pipes or leaks. Could this play a factor in the amount of accidents on the bend?” asked residents.

JMPD and Mondeor SAPS attended the scene.
