My heart belongs to daddy

Jenny's dad said: "You've either got it, or you ain't got it."

LINMEYER – Jenny Peters, piano teacher at Marist Brothers Linmeyer, has recently launched her first CD, My Dad’s Kinda Music, as a tribute to her late father, Solly Germanus, whose nickname was Jazz.

“My dad’s love for music was the essence of my piano nurturing. I began learning to play piano at five years old and by the age of 20 I’d had five teachers. My dad taught me plenty and guided me in music and when I told him I was going to make this CD, his response was, “It’s the best news I’ve heard in years!” said Jenny.

Sadly, Solly passed away on February 1 2011, so he never got to hear it but as Jenny says, “I will forever hear the resound of ‘You’ve got it kid’ and from me, it’s ‘two thumbs up for you dad’”.

Jenny has four sisters and one brother, who passed away. “We always lived in the South and in 1960 we lived in Linmeyer and I remember dad dancing with his five daughters. Dad was a great entertainer, a mesmerizing vocalist, he excelled in drumming and was a humourist with a natural flair and he took to the dance floor with his hat and gold shoes to spontaneous applause,” Jenny reminisced.

“My children, Tracey, Belinda and Mark inspired me to make this CD. Tracey is my biggest fan and once said to me, ‘the world don’t know what their missing.’ Belinda’s bubbly personality always keeps me on my toes and says Spanish Harlem does it for her! And my son, Mark, has a high appreciation and knowledge of music, occasionally playing the piano himself,” added Jenny.

Jenny has taught at Marist Brothers Linmeyer for 26 years. “Mark Honeywell, who was the principal then, heard me playing in the school hall for an International Convention and asked if I’d consider coming to teach piano at the school and I’ve been here ever since. “I used to run a Sunday afternoon musical matinee in the school hall 18 years ago but it became so busy I had to stop,” said Jenny.

When asked about her teaching at school jenny said, “I first nurture the love of the music in the children and then nurture the teaching. It’s very interesting teaching children. I can’t ever imagine stopping teaching,” she laughed.

Jenny recorded, My Dad’s Kinda Music, at Peter Auret, Sumo Sound Recording Studio. The CD has hits, Some where my Love (Lara’s theme from Doctor Zhivago), Frank Sinatra’s My Way, Autumn Concerto, different medley’s, Five Finger Boogies and of course, My Heart belongs to Daddy as well as other favourites.  If you’d like to purchase a copy of the CD, which sells for R100, phone Jenny 083 311 6372 or e-mail: jennypeterscd@gmail.com
