Grade 1’s new chapter

Parents and guardians need to register early for next year's admission to avoid any disappointments.

JOBURG SOUTH – There were mixed feelings among the first year learners at the primary schools in the South when the schools opened on Wednesday January 15, others were happy and some missed home.

Most first year learners were accompanied by their parents or guardians. The older ones were on their own. At The Mossie Primary School, Forest Hill, parents who didn’t register their children last year were still queuing for any chance that might arise. Also Park Junior Primary School was having those parents who were hoping their children may get a chance; however those who registered on time were in the classrooms as teaching was in progress.

This period is frustrating for both parents and schools as parents want their children to be at the classes, but the school tell them they are full. Last year MEC for Education Barbara Creecy and her department urged parents to register in time. As early as April 2013, they reminded parents to go to their nearest school to pick up application forms for learners who wanted to start in 2014.

This was done in order for schools to prepare early for school infrastructure, learners and teacher support material and furniture. They also needed sufficient time to prepare timetables, recruit teachers, and where necessary, arrange nutrition and scholar transport.
