New school gets to play at sport club

“We have received assistance and sponsorship from people and we will host the school’s first meeting with parents and the SGB on Saturday 8.” - Principal.

LA ROCHELLE – The school which had been abandoned for approximately 25 years before it was taken over by the Rest Haven Ministries NGO has made remarkable progress.

The school was reopened this year when South African schools officially started again after the summer holidays. Prior to reopening, community members and teachers took it upon themselves to clean the school and prepare it for teaching the learners.

Learning has commenced and the school no longer admits learners, as it has reached and exceeded its limit. The school has received assistance from people and the Department of Education.

“Most of the learners the school admitted were from Falcon Primary school. We were supposed to admit 440 learners, but we are now at 475. Initially we had 11 educators but now we have 13,” said Principal Mokele.

The school made a request to City Parks, with the assistance of the Department of Education, which will allow the learners to use the playground next to the school. On Saturday 8, the school will host its first meeting with parents and the SGB.

On Wednesday 5, the learners were allowed to use the nearby Maritimo Sport Club for athletics for the first time. The teachers and the principal were very grateful to the sport club for helping learners learn in the same way as other learners.
