JOHANNESBURG – At 17 Darragh Hourrides is one of the very few ballet dancers selected to represent the country at an international ballet competition at Artscape Theatre, Cape Town.
The talented Darragh, who attends Vanessa Eborall School of Ballet at Crown Garden, left for Cape Town on Sunday February 16 for the competition scheduled to run from Monday 17 to Sunday 23, of this February.
The competition will have competitors from foreign countries such as Korea, Cuba, Switzerland, the United States and other countries. Darragh is honoured to be selected to represent the country after she went through tough auditions stages last year November.
“Ballet is my passion. I eat, sleep and dream ballet, nothing else matters. It’s like my soul comes alive when I dance. I am excited; I have been preparing and training for a long time.
“My parents are excited for me and they support me and help me with my training. They are very, very supportive,” Darragh said.
She was very joyful and struggled for words to express her excitement because the opportunity meant a lot to her. She was very grateful to her teachers: Vanessa Eborall, June Melville and Dorothy de Witt.
Darragh has been dancing since she was four years old. She was very happy to see people from the community come to Vanessa Eborall School of Ballet to show their support.
“As teachers we wish her good luck. We hope she enjoys it and does her best,” said Vanessa Eborall, one of her teachers.
