The sad journey of Sponono
SARAC would like to thank Jerry and his rangers, Karen Allan-Grainger and Ceri von Ludwig, for all of their assistance, donations and sponsorship which have helped Sponono.
JOBURG SOUTH – Sponono was found wandering on one of the main streets in an area south of Johannesburg on New Year’s Day 2014. Sponono means beauty, but at the time Sponono was not looking so beautiful.
The fireworks must have terrified this poor baby and she broke free of her run. Jerry Selwane from SARAC (Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre) found her on the streets and had difficulty catching her. She eventually found her way back to her yard and was chained up. She was lactating and recently had puppies.
SARAC helped to get rid of her tick and flea infestation. They also received a generous food donation, tinned food, a bowl and blankets. She was doing well. Her puppies, four females and two males were also well and would soon be available for adoption.
Fencing and a kennel was delivered to Sponono and her owner. This meant that she could move around freely in her yard.
She was taken to the vet, Dr Shear, and given a vitamin boost. Four of her puppies were moved away from her, to ensure she recovers faster. jerry visited Sponono every second day and she was eating and he ensured she was clean and her ears were treated. Her puppies are now eight weeks old and ready for adoption.
Unfortunately something sad happened over the weekend of February 8. She escaped from her yard during a big storm. She has not been seen since. Jerry and his rangers are searching everywhere for her. They need the assistance of the public, especially children. There is a R100 reward for a lead to find her.
SARAC would also like to thank Jerry and his rangers, Karen Allan-Grainger and Ceri von Ludwig, for all of their assistance, donations and sponsorship which have helped with Sponono thus far.
If you spot her or have information about her, kindly contact Jerry Selwane, SARAC, 079 797 1955. This is just one of the many cases which Jerry and his rangers deal with on a daily basis. They really could do with some assistance – dogfood (wet and dry), blankets, kennels, tick and flea powder/dip, dewormers – any assistance, big or small will help!
