Herbs for life

Cheap and affordable: You don’t need a big space to realise your dream.

KLEINDORPIE – A little corner (Hatley and Jacob streets) of Kleindorpie has become a plant market for women in that area, and they are making profits out of it.

Supported by SAB (Castle Milk Stout), this little corner has drawn a couple of women who plant herbs. These herbs are then sold to the local restaurants. These women were called together by Irene Rugheimer from Dark Rose Foundation with the help of Ward 55 Cllr Rashieda Landis, who endorsed this initiative.

“We plant micro-greens, very healthy and nutritious herbs. The local councillor identifies the place and we work with the community. Also the local company, Green Earth Concepts help us to build the garden centre,” explained Irene Rugheimer.

After every two weeks it is harvest time. Spinach, basil, beetroot and carrots are some of their vegetables. One of the women, Lind Perumal, said the women were excited to have this plant market and managing it themselves.

Besides this plant market, Irene said the women will be taught book keeping, how to do budget and banking.

“Everywhere we go we empower the community. From now on these women will be selling their stock directly to the targeted market, we remove the middleman,” noted Irene.

The Dark Rose Foundation was founded by Sane Nkabinde through the Sanelisiwe Zamaphondla Trust. It is a channel through which Sane and Irene can give back to the community.

The foundation is driven to support other organisations and charities that support women, girls and children and assist in sustainable community development projects.
