SOUTH Rand Road has been a gateway in and out of Linmeyer, South Hills, The Hill and Rosettenville, and will soon serve a new development called Moffat Park.
Ward 56’s Clr Dennis Jane explained: “The development is a widening of South Rand Road, and is being done to cater for the increase in residents once the Moffat Park development has been completed.”
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has awarded contracts for the widening of Nephin Road, in South Hills, and South Rand Road, in Linmeyer.
With the development of Moffat Park, where 5 327 units are being built, the area will soon see an increase in residents and, subsequently, also in traffic.
Bulk services, including sewerage, water and electricity, are already in place for the initial three phases, creating capacity for two schools, crèches, churches, sports facilities and parks.
Although the move by JRA can be described as proactive, the excavations by their subcontractor on South Rand Road have been called reckless by Linmeyer residents, and failure to produce a way leave form, which is an indication to construction workers of what the construction site contains. This form should detail the outline of pipes and cables. –
Residents have complained about the workmanship of the subcontractor on South Rand Road; the workers have been accused of damaging cables connecting electricity, resulting in power outages in Linmeyer.
Lonerock Construction site manager Elliot Nethononda said they are currently replacing the asbestos water pipes with high impact pipes.
He also stated that they received information from JRA that there are cables running under the vacant ground and that they had followed proper procedures when digging up the pipes where the cables are.
Nethononda confirmed that they have cut and removed cable pipes, but could not say where the copper was taken.
Jane said this often happens when subcontractors do this kind of work and that it results in breaking the power supply.
